40 Elements of Healthy Development

Diane Januszkiewicz, High School Counselor

On January 22, a group from Cle Elum/Roslyn High School attended a workshop that focused on eight areas of external and internal assets which promote positive behaviors and attitudes in children and adolescents.  The presenter, Clay Roberts, shares this list with enthusiasm at every opportunity (including with his neighbors on flights to and from workshops) and he shared with us his belief that, “In an ideal world, this list would be sent home from the hospital with every new parent.”

Please take a moment to read these assets.  Put them someplace that you will continue to look at them.  Which assets can you as a parent, educator, neighbor, and friend, endorse and support in the young people you know?  Get to know the kids in your neighborhood.  Give them opportunities to be of service in the community.  Celebrate your participation in the lives of our young people.  You do make a difference.

The greatest predictor of success at school is a loving and supportive family.  The second highest predictor is a connection to school.  You may say, “This is merely common sense,” but as Clay Roberts pointed out, “Common sense is not common practice.”
